ABI Research: 6 billion smart cards shipped in 2010
In terms of value, the IC market returned to the US$ 2 billion (EUR 1.5 billion) level after a significant decline in 2009 when it fell to US$ 1.7 billion (EUR 1.28 billion).
Contactless smart cards accounted for just over 10% of the total. In the payment and banking sector, 2010 shipment volumes grew 15% in 2010, and are forecast to expand even faster in 2011, exceeding 1 billion shipments for the first time. The study includes estimates for the installed base and the annual shipments volumes of smart cards and smart card ICs, as well as tracking the ASP and the resultant revenues.
