4.285 billion smart cards shipped in 2007

Thursday 15 November 2007

The future seems bright for wireless communication: the 3 billion SIM cards milestone is expected to be reached by 2008, a 15% growth from 2007. The growth in this sector will be driven by emerging countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China and by Africa.

In 2008, the 16% growth for payment is mainly due to continuous EMV migration and technical upgrade in Europe and Asia, and to contactless payments in United States, Japan and Europe.  Contactless payment cards in 2008 are estimated around 60 million.

e-Passports will remain a strong growth driver of this segment in 2008 with 60 million units shipped, a 33% growth compared to 2007. In addition, health care cards projects should be a new driver in 2008 with on going national projects deployment such as Germany, France, Belgium, Slovenia, Taiwan, China. Finally national e-ID programs will begin in 2008 and gain traction in the following years.
