Ingenico secured international contracts

Meanwhile, rumors that Ingenico is considering a purchase of Hi-Media (HIM)’s electronic-payment business, showed up again in August 2011 (cf. Smart Insights Weekly #11-18). Ingenico once again sent out a press-release confirming its absence of interest for all or part of the activities of Hi-Media.

Based in Paris, France, Hi-Media generated half of its EUR 222 million in sales in 2010 from the electronic-payment unit, which lets consumers send and receive money online and via phones. The business would help an acquirer gain share in the global mobile payments market, which Juniper Research expects to reach US$ 670 billion (EUR 493 billion) by 2015. The company’s Allopass micropayment platform is available in 65 countries and is used for more than 8 million transaction a month. Hi-Media’s business also includes the Hipay electronic wallet and a phone-based billing service. According to some analysts, Hi-Media may be able to command a price of at least EUR 120 million.

Ingenico’s ISMP, the company’s solution able to turn iPod touch and iPhone into a secure payment terminal, has been selected by Apple for its Apple Stores in France and in the UK. Allowing easy payment “on the go” for mobile merchants, and mobile POS and “queue busting” for retailers, the iSMP solution enables allows to turn an iPhone or an iPod into a complete secure business solution, as the device supports EMV Chip and PIN, contactless cards, and magstripe.

 

At the same time, Ingenico is intensifying its international partnerships. The company announced that the first “Interactive Messaging System” application, developed by Ingenico Turkey, is put into practice with Is Bank. The new application transforms a POS (point-of-sale) terminal into a two-way communication device between the bank and the merchant. With this application, Is Bank became able to directly deliver marketing and campaign announcements for merchants through Ingenico POS terminals.

The multi-function application can simultaneously carry out many marketing/sales application as well as the campaign notifications. For instance, it can run survey studies for merchants and cashiers, who may send short informing videos or new products information, and sales conditions can be sent immediately to target merchant group. Customizable applications such as cross-sales can be set up and instant campaigns for merchants can be carried out over the system.

 

Also, Ingenico supplied its MasterCard certified contactless EFT930 payment terminals for rollout of one of the UK’s biggest music events, the Isle of Wight Festival, attended by approximately 65,000 people. The project, led by MasterCard, included PayPass prepaid wristbands deployed in the VIP area. The ID&C, a UK-based provider of security wristbands and branded lanyards, produced contactless wristbands, pre-loaded with GBP 30 (EUR 35) were offered to 150 festival-goers. New payment utilities were used to purchase food and drink.

Another partnership where Ingenico took part is with Italian restaurant chain in the UK, Zizzi, which rolled out Pennies, the electronic charity box. The project involves Zizzi’s nationwide network of 118 restaurants and intends to raise more money for the charity nominated Prince’s Trust. Customers visiting the restaurant chain, who pay for their meal by card, have the choice to top up their bill by GBP 0.20 (EUR 0.23). This follows the success of a trial in a small number of venues which began in December 2010. Ingenico supplied its mobile Chip & PIN payment terminal with the integrated ‘Pennies solution’

 

In Nigeria, Ingenico announced that in a bid to improve the verification method and transaction turn-around times, it has implemented a Branch Banking solution to create a Fast Track Service lane in the banking halls of Nigerian Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank). The solution requires every customer to use their debit cards on Ingenico iPP350 PIN pad terminal for their cash withdrawal and deposit transactions. GTBank has partnered with Ingenico to deploy the solution with 850 units of iPP350 PIN pad terminal across its 187 branches nationwide.
