Mastercard offering contactless payments sticker

Thursday 9 April 2009

The Blaze Mobile MasterCard PayPass mobile payment sticker is equipped with radio frequency technology, offering secure contactless payment. Although the mobile payment sticker is designed to work specifically with mobile devices, it functions just like other PayPass devices. The mobile payment sticker transmits card information to the merchant’s point-of-sale terminal, allowing consumers to simply “tap” their mobile device with the sticker affixed on a PayPass reader to complete their transaction.

Although called NFC by Mastercard, the sticker technology itself is unsophisticated. However as an interim solution until NFC becomes real, it does introduce people to using their mobile handset as a payment device. NFC phones may become common in several years. The question for now is how the partners will entice users to put the sticker on their handsets.
