NTT Docomo and KT partner on NFC coupons

Thursday 22 March 2012

To mark the launch of the service, KT and DoCoMo will make available NFC coupon roaming for KT subscribers coming to Japan. The initial cross-border service will see the two carriers providing NFC smart posters at Tokyo's Haneda airport and Seoul's Gimpo airport as well as at a variety of shopping malls in the two cities. Customers with an NFC phone will be able to use the service in either country to download coupons and special offers as well as to access tourist information and maps in their own language so that they can easily locate local merchants offering discounts and redeem coupons at participating merchants. The carriers' platform also allows coupons to be sent to subscribers' phones via MMS and support for QR codes will also be included.

In H1/2013, DoCoMo subscribers visiting Korea will get packaged NFC services comprising not only roaming coupons but also payment.

NTT Docomo and KT are already working with China Mobile for the expansion of he service to China (cf. SIW #11-04), and is in discussion with carriers in countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and Hong Kong, with the objective to create later a globally compatible service with carriers in the US and Europe.
