Over 2.5 million Cityzi handsets in France

Thursday 14 February 2013

More than 2.5 million handsets are now in use across France that are enabled with NFC Cityzi contactless technology. The number of phones supporting the Cityzi service has increased rapidly from the 1 million being used in June 2012 (cf. Smart Insights Weekly #12-26), according to the French contactless sector association AFSCM (Association Française du Sans Contact Mobile – French Contactless Mobile Association). The majority of handset vendors : Samsung, LG, Sony Mobile Communications, HTC, BlackBerry, Motorola Mobility and Nokia, consider NFC SIM-based technology a priority and are integrating support into their new products.

Cityzi, first launched commercially in 2011 with the support of France Telecom Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and NRJ Mobile, is now supported across 26 handsets, up from 14 a year ago and 18 in June 2012. In addition 55,000 French merchants are equipped with Cityzi-compatible contactless payments terminals. Until now, the program has led deployments in Nice (cf. SIW #10-21), Strasbourg, Bordeaux and now Caen. Marseille and Paris are the next cities to be equipped with NFC-compatible POS terminals.

the Cityzi program in France does not only push consumers to use their phones to pay contactless in shops, but also works with local authorities to prepare the whole city for a contactless experience. As a results, consumers are able to use their phone to shop but also to pay for their train ticket, their parking space or their public bicycle.

AFSCM did not publish data about transaction volume, which NFC services are the most successful, etc.
