RBS to trial PayPass in London taxis
The terminals can also be used for normal Chip-and-PIN card transactions of over GBP 10 (EUR 12.56). The trial will include 25 London-based taxis owned by Xeta. If demand meets expectations, rollout of contactless card readers will be extended to Xeta's entire taxi fleet. The technology for the pilot was developed in partnership with Commidea, a UK card processing systems supplier.
Cash has traditionally been the preferred choice of payment for taxis. But an RBS survey has found that 42% of Londoners would be willing to pay by card for a taxi journey, if they had no cash on them. Also, 78% of London taxi drivers interviewed for the survey said that accepting cards would make customer payment easier and faster.
