SIMalliance opens the SIM to SCWS Technologies

Thursday 19 February 2009

Based on a tiny web server embedded in a SIM card and taking advantage of the handset browser as a user interface, the SCWS bridges the gap between the SIM and the Internet to allow operators and developers create new SIM applications and services and ease their distribution towards consumers.

The SIMalliance SCWS Working Group has published an in-depth White Paper providing ecosystem players, in particular Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and Service Providers (SPs). The White Paper can be downloaded at: www.simalliance.org/Downloads/SCWS

This demo kit has been demonstrated during Mobile World Congress 2009 by several smart card manufacturers. For example, Gemalto announced that T-Mobile has selected its prototypes of media applications based on SCWS technology in the SIM card. Gemalto provided the operator with its MultimediaReady SIM card incorporating SCWS technology, which enables applications to run directly from the SIM. This approach allows T-Mobile to develop applications on any SCWS-compatible handset and consequently, to broaden access to high-end services, while offering a multimedia look and feel.
