Overcoming the crisis

Gartner recently published a study in which the analyst firm anticipates worldwide IT spending is will experience a 6% decline in 2009 from 2008, reaching US$ 3.2 trillion (EUR 2,290 billion) in 2009, instead of US$ 3.4 trillion (EUR 2,430 billion) in 2008. Gartner also gives details for its forecasts: computing hardware spending is to be down by 16.3% whereas telecom is only to be down by 4.6%.

Mobile money to be the killer app

Mobile phone penetration passed the 4 billion line already a few months ago. The banking industry has been pushing for the bancarization of the poor for decades with very little success. Today, at least 1 billion unbanked people have a mobile phone, and are ready to use it for financial transactions.
